Having been molested by his Little League coach growing up, we are privy to how this effects his mentality and how it's shaped him into promiscuity. Two boys, Neil and Brian, are both abused by a manipulative softball coach when they're 8 years old, and each boy deals with it in VASTLY different ways. He grew up in a small farming community there, and later attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, earning a B.A. In their later teen years, the two boys have no contact. He believes he was abducted by aliens, and N. McCormick, a fellow player on Brian's childhood baseball team, may be the key as to exactly what happened that night. The writer should be commended for his skill. A seemingly impossible act of making an intelligent, literate drama about child abuse without being conventionally didactic. My biggest complaint is that I wanted a kinder, more hopeful fate for Neil. It hates child abuse, but it doesn't stop with hate; it follows the lives of its characters as they grow through the aftermath.

I can understand why it's received so many high ratings, and I would attribute that mostly to the ending.

Neil takes him back to the place where it first occured as the full extent of what was done to him (Brian) dawns on him washing over his psyche till he breaks down and weeps in Neils lap. 108 ... although the ending does come together a bit hastily.

I just don't buy that a 13 year old is this brooding and jaded. Completely differing in nature, these stories are both wholly engrossing and eventually intertwine with raw emotion.
