Were you surprised at how, even though this is a story that’s very specific to these characters, it really does feel universal when you watch it?

She talks to Leena Tailor. We try to tell it with heart and we have to try to make it something we care about. And that’s why I don’t think Netflix will bite at my pitch for the fourth installment, Royal Marriage Counseling. Rose McIver stars in Netflix’s A Christmas Prince films, including the newest one, Royal Baby. What’s useful is that the story does all of the fantastical work for you and brings about this sense of magic and surrealism, and what you’re supposed to do, as an actor, is come in and make sure the character is still three-dimensional and relatable. So, there was a lot of flexibility that we definitely embraced. The indie dramedy Brightest Star tells the story of a young man (Chris Lowell) who’s fresh out of college and devastated because the girl of his dreams (Rose McIver) has dumped him. Do you think Amber is a good blogger?Look, I think Amber would win the participation trophy at the Journalist Olympics.

What’s more likely is something about Princess Emily and how she’s coming of age. She deserves plenty of opportunities to show that.

I think that’s what drew me to the project, in the first place. And that line, even though you might struggle with it, in the moment, is serving a purpose in the greater scheme of things, that is probably stronger than the choice you might make, on the day. That’s what you do at an audition.

We were all enthusiastic enough. I’d love for a dedicated fan to build a bible around the origins of Aldovia. But nothing surprising ever happens. The dialogue was incredibly well-written. She also talked about the great experiences she’s had working on Masters of Sex, where Beau Bridges and Allison Janney play her parents, and playing Tinker Bell on Once Upon A Time. There are archetypes in many ways, and trusting they have resonance with people.

Well, I was going to ask you what your ideal fourth Christmas Prince would be, but it has to be marriage counseling now.A positive story about how we’re able to overcome a slump in a marriage by asking for help. It would be great. It’s not very critically cool to talk about, or it doesn’t make you seem very intellectual or profound to enjoy them so much. 0 0 0 0.

HAIR: NIKKI PROVIDENCE FOR JED ROOT. I bring ideas to set, and I’m more than willing for those to be affected and be malleable, based on what the other person gives me. Yes, there is improvisation and there’s flexibility about timing. Going in with empathy towards a character is the only way you can approach it.

Was it challenging to find a way to really own that character?

We’re great friends. So, she said, “When you go back to New Zealand, can you send a couple of scenes for me to show the producers?”  After meeting her, I sent a couple of scenes, as an audition, and it was all go from there. ROSE McIVER:  I was given the script, the day before I went back to New Zealand. I’ve never stuck to punctuation, in my life.

It used to be that sometimes there was a lot more padding in television, and that’s not the case anymore. Ten hours of the history of Aldovia from Ken Burns. That would be a good start. She listens, and that’s essential for a director. But without that person, sitting there and breathing down your neck, telling you what to do, it is blind. But, I come from a background of reading a lot of really great texts by great people, and when there’s a good wordsmith that you’re dealing with, you want to honor those words. A Christmas Prince really leaned into that.

Nobody acts purely selfishly. Now for the third one, I’m solving a mystery while giving birth in a room full of people. She’s incredibly communicative, she’s sure-footed, and she doesn’t have a big enough, crazy ego not to let other people’s voices matter.

Have you had any particularly surreal moments on that set? I love her so much.

She finds the whole situation outrageous as well.

Yes, we will choose to believe that a middling New York City blogger, who breaks into a royal palace on behalf of her clickfarm gossip website, proceeds to (1) Fall in love with the king of Aldovia, (2) Marry the king of Aldovia, and (3) Give birth to the king of Aldovia’s child, all while preaching the importance of damn good SEO. Can you tell me a little about where you were in your career when you signed on for A Christmas Prince, and why pivoting to the holiday genre appealed to you?Funny enough, when I got the call, I was in a secluded part of southern New Zealand visiting my best friend and I had very patchy reception.

Technologically, she’s not necessarily good. I think there are really, really good opportunities to delve deeper and deeper into a character, over multiple episodes.
