On the peeve (getting after it) in St Andrews with Davy Divot – an alternative round! Tom Watson said the par 3 seventh was his favorite hole in Scotland, but I just liked the overall flow of the course. The course is situated hard between the railway and the sea, typical of Ayrshire courses.

I knew absolutely nothing about the place beforehand, but was blown away by the stunning vistas and fun layout. Only the very the straightest tee shots are good enough – if you happen to miss the green anywhere else, you're unlikely to achieve anything beyond a par-4. Played in 2014; after 4 holes, the wind picked up to 4 clubs and it was also raining sideways. At more than 6,700 yards, Western Gailes delivers a tricky test to experienced golfers as well as unique thrills to less experienced players, placing emphasis on shot quality just as much as length. Plenty of important championships have been contested over its deceptively demanding fairways, and the course has frequently been used as a final qualifying venue for the Open Championship when hosted at Turnberry or Royal Troon.

But, here, it gets lost among Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry.

Weather had changed (Scotland) and we had a 3 club wind with temp around 54. Rain was coming down hard and wind was blowing 30-40 mph. Been to Western Gailes twice in the last two years. Staff are friendly and very helpful right from the start.

3-Flight. The dunes themselves, and the out of bounds wall from the 14th onwards, offer an unending supply of tricky pot bunkers.

Easily accessed from anywhere on the Ayrshire coast.

I would imagine in gusty weather it's a real bear, but enjoyable no matter what. The longer holes play into the prevailing wind which ups the challenge. In 1923 its attractions were being lauded by the then US Open Champion Gene Sarazen who played the course with three other outstanding professionals. The greens sit in little folds of the dunes on several holes, rendering some shots blind. Easily one of the best courses in western Scotland. I can remember every hole vividly, especially the par 3s. Western Gailes on 26.4.2019 Wind, rain, cold.

ST41832. The tee box has the best view as you are able to see over the dunes. We had the course nearly to ourselves.

Tough and challenging test with only 10-15 MPH winds off the sea for this 9.5 handicap player. Together with the line of dunes running down the coastal stretch from the 5th to the 13th holes, the out of bounds wall from the 14th onwards, the plentiful supply of pot bunkers plus the meandering burns, all combine to present variety and a memorable challenge. We played it on a relatively calm day, though. Western Gailes is the type of townie course, alongside Brora and Crail, that is the glue to any great Scottish itinerary.

The entrance is warm and welcoming, while the main hall indicates the pleasures that lie ahead, which sits above the links with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and beyond, is the perfect place to relax after testing your skills on the course. We decided to play match play and it was an awesome course for that decision. A 198 yard par-3, this is one of the greatest links par 3s in the nation and demands a lot from players.
